Rusta gears up with a new e-commerce solution

Sweden’s leading discount retailer Rusta launches a new e-commerce solution. The decision results from the pandemic and a change in customer behaviour. The new e-commerce site has been developed through a collaboration with software company Optimizely and tech company Nexer.

The physical store has always been the core of the low-cost retailer Rusta’s business. Today, the chain has over 100 department stores across Sweden. The website Rusta.com has so far served as a marketing channel. A channel where Rusta has showcased the department store range, highlighted promotions and even provided directions to the nearest department store. But now Rusta.com is being turned into a digital department store, in parallel with continuing to be an important marketing channel.

  • The decision to focus on e-commerce was an effect of the pandemic, says Rickard Davebo, product manager of web & e-commerce at Rusta. During the pandemic, we had many home deliveries, which were very appreciated by our customers. Home deliveries are usually ordered via the website, so the decision to invest more fully in e-commerce was a natural one.

Despite the major online investment, Rusta sees e-commerce as a complement to physical stores. Most of the business is still in the physical stores.

  • Through e-commerce, we want to simplify the buying process and broaden the target group. We have 3.1 million visitors to rusta.com monthly and 4.5 million members of our customer club. These are the people we are targeting with our new e-commerce. At the same time, we are making it easier for people far from a Rusta store to take advantage of our wide range of products,” says Rickard Davebo.
  • An important part is that the website enables scalability, says Ebba Persson, project manager at Nexer Unified Commerce. In Rusta’s case, it also has a brand new and improved search function, making it easier for customers to navigate.
